The Story

Circa 1860–1890. This Victorian lava cameo pendant features a finely carved portrait of Zeus (Jupiter), executed in Vesuvian lava sourced from the region surrounding Mount Vesuvius in Naples, Italy. The high-relief carving displays strong classical modeling, with deeply defined curls and a full, expressive beard, capturing the authoritative presence associated with the king of the gods.

Lava cameos of this type were produced during the height of the Grand Tour, when travelers to southern Italy sought tangible connections to the ancient world. Drawing inspiration from archaeological discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum, these carvings reflect the 19th-century fascination with classical antiquity and the revival of Greco-Roman iconography.

Unlike more common, flatter examples, this cameo exhibits notable depth and sculptural quality, particularly in the treatment of the hair and facial planes. The matte surface of the lava lends a stone-like presence, closely aligned with ancient carved reliefs.

The cameo is set within a simple 14KT gold bezel frame, allowing the carving itself to remain the focal point.
